Dark season ski tour

If you have never seen the beauty of the polar night, this might be the tour for you. We will ski into the Käsivarsi Wilderness area, among the highest peaks of Finnish Lapland. We will stay above the treeline during the entire tour and you will experience the vastness of Arctic tundra. From the weather we can expect anything. It might get harsh up there with temperatures dropping below -30°C or we might encounter real winter blizzard. If the winds get too high, we might have to seek shelter from our tents or wilderness huts, and wait until weather improves. Nevertheless, dark season is unique time in the Arctic. There is hardly any sunlight during the daytime-hours, but on a clear day the horizon is colored with all the shades of pink, orange and purple. If we are lucky, we can watch northern lights dancing on the sky during the night.

During the tour we will sleep in cozy wilderness huts. The huts are basic standard with wood burning stove to keep us warm and gas stove for cooking. The beds have mattresses and you will use your own sleeping bag. The toilets are located outside.

This is a moderate ski tour, and you should already have experience of cross country skiing and staying outside in the cold all day. You will be pulling a pulka with all your personal gear and food for four days.

Daily itinerary

We meet in Kilpisjärvi village in the morning. We will pack, go through the plans of the following days and start skiing in the afternoon. After skiing 12 km we will arrive to the Saarijärvi wilderness hut where we sleep the first night.

We will use the lightest hours of the days to cover the distance between the wilderness huts. In total we will ski approximately 50 km during the tour. The daily distances will vary from 10 km to 15 km.

We will prepare breakfast and dinner in the wilderness huts. During the day we will enjoy lunch outside. All the food and equipment is carried by ourselves in our pulkas. The itinerary is adapted according to the weather and skiing conditions.
