Lyngen trek
This trek is taking you through the 90 kilometer long Lyngen peninsula from South to North. Hiking among the high mountains, numerous waterfalls and blue glaciers in the land of the midnight sun is definitely experience hard to forget. The area is popular for day-tripping, but on a longer hike you will get to experience the truly wild side of Lyngen Alps. There are only a few short marked trails and well worn walking paths in Lyngen area. Our route will mainly pass less traveled terrain, but we will also utilize some of the existing trail network. On this hiking adventure you will see a beautiful mix of Northern Norwegian wild nature and culture landscape.
This is a demanding tour and you need to be up for a challenge. Participants should have good physical condition and ability to carry backpack in various terrain. In total we will walk a distance of 130 km, in mountainous and partly difficult ground. There are many descents and ascents along the way: In total we need to cover 5000 altitude meters in 8-9 days. The highest point of the route lies around 1000 meter above sea level.
We will carry all our camping gear, common food and personal belongings in backpacks. However, we don't need to bear the full provisions during the entire tour. Approximately half way of the route, we pass through the village Lyngseidet, where we will be resupplied with food and gas. We camp every night in different locations - breath-taking views guaranteed!
Daily itinerary
Day 1
We meet around midday in Nordkjosbotn village, southern end of Lyngen peninsula. We will divide the common equipment, pack and go through the plans of the following week and start our tour. We will walk up to the mountains and already first night you will be camping surrounded by the beautiful Lyngen Alps.
Day 2-8
Full days of walking. We will find our way over mountain passes, through beautiful valleys and across ice cold rivers. The daily distances will vary from 15 km to 20 km.
We will prepare breakfast and dinner in the camp. During the day we will enjoy lunch outside. The itinerary is adapted according to the weather conditions.
Day 9
We will arrive to Lyngstuva lighthouse, which is the northernmost point of Lyngen peninsula. Here we will end our journey, and travel further according to individual plans. The best option is to share a taxi back to Svensby. From Svensby it's possible to continue towards Tromsø or other directions with public transport. In Svensby there are some accommodation possibilities, if one wishes to stay over in the area for a night or two.
Additional costs
The public transport is limited on the area where we will end our hike. Most likely we will be sharing a taxi back to the closest bus stop which is located 45 km away. This would cost around 300-400 nok per person.
Food package
If you are not sure what kind of food you should bring, we will make it easy for you. We are offering food package for additional cost. It will be 200 nok per day including breakfast, lunch and dinner. You only need to take care to bring enough snacks and sweets with you.
How to get there
The nearest airport is in Tromsø. There are several daily bus connections from Tromsø to Nordkjosbotn. You can also take a bus there from Kilpisjärvi, Finland.
From Svensby ferry terminal, there are two daily bus connections to Tromsø. You can reach Nordkjosbotn from Svensby by bus as well.
