Dark season ski expedition
This ski expedition leads you into the heart of the polar night. They call it dark season, but on a clear day the twilight hours are coloring the sky with intensive pink and violet colors. When the darkness falls the landscape is often lighten up with moonlight or the dancing northern lights. This is definitely the most magical time of the year.
From the weather we can expect anything. On cold and clear days, temperature can drop down to -30 ºC. We stay above the tree line during the entire tour and the Arctic Ocean with raging storms is not far away. If the winds get too high, we might need to seek shelter from our tents or wilderness huts, and wait until the weather improves.
During the expedition we will sleep in cozy wilderness huts. The huts are basic standard with wood burning stove to keep us warm and gas stove for cooking. The beds have mattresses and you will use your own sleeping bag. The toilets are located outside.
This is a challenging ski tour, and you should already have experience of cross country skiing and staying outside in the cold all day. You will be pulling a pulka with all your personal gear and food for seven days.
We meet in Kilpisjärvi village in the morning. We will pack, go through the plans of the following week and start skiing in the afternoon. After skiing 12 km we will arrive to the Saarijärvi wilderness hut where we sleep the first night.
Full days of skiing. During the week we are aiming to reach the highest point of Finland, Halti. In total we will cover approximately 100 km with our skis. The daily distances will vary from 10 km to 20 km.
We will prepare breakfast and dinner in the wilderness huts. During the day we will enjoy lunch outside. All the food and equipment is carried by ourselves in our pulkas. The itinerary is adapted according to the weather and skiing conditions.
In the late afternoon we will arrive to Kilpisjärvi village where our tour is ending. In Kilpisjärvi there are many accommodation options for you to choose from.
If you are not sure what kind of food you should bring, we will make it easy for you. We are offering food package for additional cost. It will be 200 nok per day including breakfast, lunch and dinner. You only need to take care to bring enough snacks and sweets with you.
