svalbard trek

Svalbard trek is a hiking adventure accross a true arctic wilderness. Svalbard is arctic archipelago, situated between 74° and 81° northern latitudes, halfway between mainland Norway and North Pole. It’s the kingdom of polar bear, svalbard reindeer and arctic fox. Landscape is characterized with wide, grassy valleys, glaciers, glacial rivers, majestic mountains, arctic flora and fascinating cultural historical monumets. In the summertime it’s very rare to meet other people in the remote valleys of Svalbard. The midnight sun is definitely experience hard to forget – in Svalbard the sun in shining high above the horizon all night long!

This is a demanding tour and you need to be up for a challenge. Participants should have good physical condition and ability to carry backpack in various terrain. In total we will walk a distance of 80–110 km, in mountainous and partly difficult ground. Daily legs will vary from 15 to 20 km. There will be many rivercrossings along the way – and the glacial water is surely cold! We have a few different route options, and the final route will be chosen according conditions and group abilities. Svalbard is a real untouched wilderness and there are no marked trails to follow. During the hike the experienced Svalbard guides will share their knowledge about the history, flora and fauna of the area.

We will carry all our camping gear, food and personal belongings in backpacks. We camp every night in different locations - breath-taking views guaranteed! Since we are travelling through polar bear-land, each participant must expect to stand outside in polar bear-watch every night approximatery for an hour. True Svalbard experience!

Evening before the tour we will meet in Longyearbyen. We will get to know each other  and go through the gear and plans. In town you have chance to make last minute shopping as there are several sportshops and a supermarket.

On the first day (6th August) of the tour, we get a lift to Adventdalen-valley, where our adventure begins.
