Senja crossing

Senja is the second largest island in Norway. It is very fascinating place for outdoor adventures. While hiking across Senja you will see everything from steep coastal mountains to inland tundra, green valleys and old grown pine forests. Senja really is like Norway in a nutshell. It's no wonder that the locals call Senja an "adventure island". The best time for Senja crossing would be from July to end of September. In July the landscape has been drying after all the snow melt and the hiking season is really getting started. In September the autumn is on its way and the landscape is colored with various shades of red, yellow, purple, orange and brown. After a crispy night there might even be some frost covering the terrain.

During this scenic tour we will follow the less traveled "Senja på Langs" -hiking trail. If the weather, hiking conditions and fitness level of the group will allow it, we can also choose more challenging routes over some mountain passes. The weather can change rapidly due to the coastal climate. The total length of the tour will be 70-80 km depending on the route we will follow. Each night we will pitch our tents in the most beautiful camp spots one can imagine. We will cook breakfast and dinner in the camp. During the hiking-days we will enjoy a simple lunch out in the wilderness. All the equipment and food is carried by ourselves in our backpacks.

This tour suites for anyone with moderate physical condition and some good adventure spirit. The daily hiking distances would normally not be over 20 km. There will be tough up hills, dense bush and a few wetlands to tackle, but the scenery makes it up for sure.

Daily itinerary

Day 1

We meet in Finnsnes during the afternoon. We will take a bus to the starting point of the hike on north side of Senja island. Before we hit the trail, we will divide all the common equipment, food etc.

In the evening we will walk a short distance to our first camp. After an intensive uphill we will be rewarded by beautiful camp spot. We eat late dinner after we have pitched the tents.

Day 2-6

Full days of hiking. The daily distances will vary from 10 km to 20 km. We are heading to Southwest, across the interior of Senja. We are traveling through impressive valleys, some wetlands and rugged mountain plateaus.

We will prepare breakfast and dinner in the camp. During the day we will enjoy simple lunch outside.
